What started as a way to supplement his income has since become a full-time job for one Memphis-area small business owner.
Frank Jacob, owner of PSH Cleaning Service LLC on Summer Avenue, spent 25 years in the restaurant industry before he made the transition to the world of cleaning.
“All of my background has been food,” Jacob said. “Culinary degree, things of that nature … my job took me to Memphis in 2001, running the Chuck E. Cheese’s in Raleigh, and then I opened up the one in Cordova.”
Jacob eventually left Chuck E. Cheese’s, but he returned to the Raleigh store after another business venture failed to pan out. With the general manager’s compensation heavily based on bonus potential, Jacob said he had to find a way to bring in additional income.
It was while training cleanliness standards to his management staff and employees at Chuck E. Cheese’s that he realized where that extra income might come from.
“If I can train management and employees on how to do this, why not go ahead and try offering this to commercial people?” Jacob said. “So, I started marketing that, and Chick-fil-A was our very first account.”
With two days of cleaning, Jacob could recoup his bonus potential for the entire month.
Once he had built up a sufficient client base, Jacob was able to quit his full-time job and focus on cleaning. In 2005, he and his wife, Patricia S. Haddad, officially launched PSH Cleaning Service.
The bulk of PSH Cleaning’s business is residential, but Jacob said they have a good commercial client base.
Marty Kiser, with the 65-year-old Memphis company Kiser’s Floor Fashions, said when his customers ask for cleaning recommendations, he refers them to Jacob.
“Frank came to me, and he wanted someone to partner with,” Kiser said. “He is very reliable, he is on time, he does an excellent job cleaning. Our customers like him, and he is very hands on.”
Today, PSH Cleaning has grown from a husband and wife duo to include three technicians and a several office workers. They have also gone from working out of their home to an office at Shelby Oaks Drive to their current home at 5640 Summer Ave.
“This is our second year here [on Summer Avenue],” Jacob said. “Our business has been growing, and we brought on a niche cleaning of hand-washing oriental rugs. That has really taken off.”
In addition to the recently added oriental rug cleaning service, for which Jacob had a custom rug tub built at his facility, PSH Cleaning also offers carpet cleaning; natural stone resurfacing, cleaning and sealing; upholstery cleaning; odor control; tile and grout cleaning and sealing; and Fiber ProTector.
PSH Cleaning technicians are IICRC certified and WoolSafe certified.
“Our core value with our company is building the whole individual,” Jacob said. “The more we build them the better they are going to do their job and serve our clients.”
